World Elder Abuse Awareness Day: Violence in Indian Country

In recognition of World Elder Abuse Awareness Day, June 15, 2016, NIWRC is pleased to present this webinar. World Elder Abuse Awareness Day (WEAAD) began ten years ago in 2006 by the International Network for the Prevention of Elder Abuse and the World Health Organization at the United Nations to provide an opportunity for people and communities around the world “to promote a better understanding of abuse and neglect of older persons by raising awareness of the cultural, social, economic and demographic processes affecting elder abuse and neglect.”

WEAAD serves as a call-to-action for individuals, tribal nations, organizations, and communities to raise awareness about elder abuse, neglect, and exploitation. The abuse, neglect and exploitation of our elders occurs in every culture. It can happen to anyone.

Everyday in this country, countless numbers of older persons are abused, neglected and exploited. It is estimated that in the US, our elders lose more than $2.6 billion due to elder financial abuse and exploitation, often depriving them of basic needs such as food, shelter and medical attention.
